HEALTH INFORMATION ON ANTHRAX

Thursday, 18th October 2001

The Communicable Disease Control Branch, DH, has a specific plan in place that deals with potential biohazard events (such as bioterrorism) and has close links with emergency services to ensure public safety.

The first response to a suspicious substance being identified or suspected by the public is to call the police on 000 or 131 444.

Initial response if a hazardous substance is suspected:

  • handle with care. Don't shake or bump
  • don't open, smell, touch or taste
  • isolate it immediately
  • cordon the immediate area
  • if you haven't already done so, call the police on 000 or 131 444.

The police will contact emergency services to assess the hazard. If a hazardous substance is identified the process will be:

  • Everyone who has had hand contact must wash their hands with soap and water.
  • Shower with soap and water as soon as possible if clothing or skin contamination occurred (Place all items worn into plastic bags and seal.)
  • Alternatively, the fire service will attend and decontaminate people as required.
