The South Australian Cervix Screening Program is a partner of the National Cervical Screening Program.
The aim of the Program is to reduce the incidence of cancer of the cervix by increasing the proportion of women who are screened at two yearly intervals and by promoting a high quality of screening and follow-up services.
One of the main tasks of the SA Cervix Screening Program is to encourage women to have a Pap smear every two years in line with the national policy. Recruitment activities target the general population of women, with particular emphasis on women who are over 50 years, Aboriginal women, women who live in low screening areas and women from non-English speaking backgrounds.
The Program has established the Pap Smear Back-up Record System, a register of all Pap smears and biopsies from all SA laboratories. The Program sends reminders to women and their doctors when Pap smears or follow-up treatment is overdue; assists laboratories in case management; and provides statistics on screening participation.
The Program also has a role in assisting laboratories with quality assurance activities and promoting national guidelines on the follow-up and treatment of screen detected abnormalities.
