Public and Environmental Health Council (PEHC)

Legislation

In South Australia, the key statutory environmental health obligations and practices of local councils are specified in three South Australian Acts of Parliament and associated regulations

  • Public and Environmental Health Act 1987
  • Food Act 2001
  • Local Government Act 1999.

There are three other pieces of legislation under which some local government Environmental Health Officers operate. However, they only apply to a small number of councils (Supported Residential Facilities Act 1992), are used to rectify some insanitary conditions (Housing Improvement Act 1940), or the relevant provisions are administered by councils on a voluntary basis (Environment Protection Act 1993).
