National funded projects with a focus on Mental Health (MH) Promotion (P),
Prevention (P) and Early Intervention (EI)—MH PPEI

< Mindframe
The Mindframe National Media Initiative is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and guided by the National Media and Mental Health Group with representatives from peak media and mental health organisations. The Mindframe Initiative is a comprehensive strategy that aims to influence media representation of issues related to mental illness and suicide, encouraging responsible, accurate and sensitive portrayals. The strategy includes a number of projects which have focussed on providing resources and education opportunities for media professionals, facilitating the inclusion of these issues in tertiary journalism education, the mental health and suicide prevention sector, police and courts, and those involved in the development of Australian film, television and theatre. The Initiative also supports SANE Australia's Media Centre and StigmaWatch program, and specific projects helping to build the evidence base for this work, developing resources for film, television and theatre, developing resources for police and courts, and helping to build evidence base for this work. (Based in Newcastle, NSW)

< MindMatters
MindMatters is a national mental health initiative for secondary schools funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing. It is implemented by the Australian Principals Associations Professional Development Council (APAPDC) and Curriculum Corporation.
MindMatters uses a whole school approach to mental health promotion, based on the principles of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Global School Health Initiative and the Australian National Health Promoting Schools framework.
MindMatters considers a range of mental health and wellbeing determinants, including the significance of cultural context.
Positive mental health and wellbeing have been strongly linked to improving schooling outcomes for young people.
The MindMatters initiative aims to:
• Embed promotion, prevention and early intervention activities for mental health and
  suicide prevention into Australian secondary schools.
• Enhance the development of school environments where young people feel safe,
  valued, engaged and purposeful.
• Develop social and emotional skills that enhance resilience and resourcefulness,
  respect, interconnectedness and interrelationships to meet life's challenges and
  enhance mental health in young people, staff, families and school communities.
• Helps school communities to plan and take action to create a climate of positive
  mental health in secondary schools. (Based in Adelaide)

< beyondblue
A national initiative to “reduce the prevalence, risks for and the impact of depressive disorders within the Australian community”. Priorities for action for 2005-2010 include: community awareness and destigmatisation, consumer and carer participation, prevention and early intervention, primary care and targeted research. Planning with beyondblue in South Australia regarding future initiatives and programs is currently underway. (Based in Melbourne)

< depressioNET
depressioNET broadly aims to:
• increase understanding of depression;
• reduce the stigma people with depression feel;
• encourage and assist access to treatment;
• provide support and assistance during treatment; and
• educate on-going management and/or relapse prevention.
The purpose of depressioNet is to empower people to make informed choices and find solutions to the challenges of living with depression through the provision of information, help and a 24 hour web based support line. (Based in Melbourne)

< Auseinet (Australian Network for Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention for Mental Health)
The key focus of the Australian Network for Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention for Mental Health (Auseinet) is to assist a range of sectors to implement mental health promotion and illness prevention approaches in their respective settings. These settings include, but are not limited to:
• mental health and health services,
• community organisations,
• schools,
• NGOs,
• educational institutions (such as TAFE and universities), and
• general practice.
Auseinet also works across all population groups.  (Based in Adelaide)

< Suicide Prevention Australia (SPA)
Suicide Prevention Australia is a non-profit, non-government organisation working as a public health advocate in suicide prevention. SPA is the only national umbrella body active in suicide prevention throughout Australia, promoting:
• Community awareness and advocacy
• Collaboration and partnerships between communities, practitioners, research and
  industry
• Information access and sharing
• Local, regional and national forums, conferences and events
SPA is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. (Based in Sydney)

< Children of Parents affected by a Mental Illness (COPMI)
A national initiative that aims to promote better outcomes for children of parents with a mental illness. Resources including guidelines and associated materials have been developed to assist individuals and services that work with children of parents with a mental illness. A training program is currently underway in South Australia. (Based in Adelaide)

< KidsMatter
KidsMatter is a primary school mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention initiative developed in collaboration with the Commonwealth Government Department of Health and Ageing, beyondblue: the national depression initiative, the Australian Psychological Society, the Australian Principals Associations Professional Development Council (APAPDC) and supported by the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.
The KidsMatter initiative aims to:
• Improve the mental health and well-being of primary school students
• Reduce mental health problems among students (e.g. anxiety, depression and
  behavioural problems)
• Achieve greater support and assistance for students experiencing mental health
  problems. (Based in Adelaide)
