Applied Environmental Health ~ Regional Services

Regional Services, Applied Environmental Health provides an extensive range of environmental health services to the northern region of South Australia outside local council areas ~ approximately 85% of the geographical area of the State.

This region of South Australia is home to about 3600 Aboriginal people who live in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Lands, with smaller communities residing in the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands, Nepabunna, Gerard, Yalata and in the townships of Oodnadatta, Marree and Copley.

The Regional Services Section works closely with remote rural and Aboriginal communities to ensure the co-operative attainment of proper environmental health standards in:

• retail food premises and food safety standards
• installation and operation of septic tanks and other waste control systems
• operation and maintenance of swimming pools and spa baths
• drinking and recreation water quality
• public health nuisances and complaints
• Indigenous environmental health issues
• employment and training of Indigenous Environmental Health Workers
• the National Indigenous Environmental Health Forum
• 'Health Hardware' for Indigenous housing
• health and safety guidelines for mass outdoor gatherings
• national Indigenous environmental health activities.
